WHAT WE DO

Teachers College has always been at the forefront of inventing fields and guiding established ones into new frontiers.

Reframing traditional pregnancy prevention and family planning approaches through the lens of Reproductive Identity Formation is forward-thinking. The Sex Education Initiative (SEI) was formed in 2017 with the mission to reform current sexual health education to include the missing dimension of reproductive psychological wellbeing. Our annual fully-funded professional development program has since trained hundreds of sexual and reproductive health (SRHE) professionals to learn and apply the new concept of Reproductive Identity to those they serve.

Under the leadership of Dr. Aurelie Athan, a clinical psychologist specializing in reproductive mental health, and Dr. Riddhi Sandil, a counseling psychologist with expertise in marginalized identities, SEI continues its innovative growth theoretically and programmatically.

The Sex Education Initiative at Teachers College, Columbia University is made possible by the generous support of the Edlow Family Foundation. Click on the video to hear how this kind of support can quickly turn academic research into applied practice!

Thanks to the Edlow Family Foundation, reproductive and sexual health professionals, locally and nationally, can now receive cutting-edge training in TC’s pillars of education, health, leadership and psychology.
