Providing Support for Sex Education in New York City Public Schools

Teachers College Sex EDucation Initiative for Middle & High School Teachers*

Held on the Teachers College, Columbia University campus, this fully-funded program consists of a teacher training pilot program on sex education with an explicit focus on Intentional Pregnancy and Parenting (IPP). This training centers on supporting adolescent development of decision-making and perspective-taking skills as it pertains to pregnancy prevention and family planning. Participants learn from content area experts and experiential workshops to explore their own personal values and histories and in turn engage their students' future-orientation on this subject. A supplemental core skills training on the foundations of sex education will be provided. Local and national guest leaders will also share lessons learned from the field of sex education and its application to NYC schools via a panel discussion. Vouchers will be included to purchase customized instructional materials relevant for their classroom and context.
